On a primal level, I think there is a spectrum of fear that controls how we respond to situations. On one end there is the "deer in the headlights" or paralyzing fear, and on the opposite end there is the hyper-aware "know what you have to do and do it" type of fear. And in the middle you're neither paralyzed nor fully aware, but still conscientiously waiting for more information more signals to act on or abandon.
